Richard Dowis has an extensive background as a writer, editor, teacher, and public relations executive. He was with Manning, Selvage & Lee, the international public relations firm, almost twenty five years and was senior vice president in the firm*s Atlanta office until 1992, when he took early retirement to pursue a career in writing, consulting, and teaching. An award winning speech writer, he has written speeches for many business executives and political figures. In 1990 he was voted the best writer in the Georgia PR community.
Before joining Manning, Selvage & Lee, he was manager of publications for The CocaCola Company, where his publications won numerous national awards for excellence. Previously, he edited weekly and daily newspapers in Georgia and Alabama and was public relations director of a major textile manufacturer.
From 1991 through 2002 he was president and executive director of the Society for the Preservation of English Language and Literature (SPELL)*an international organization of people who love language.
Hundreds of men and women from businesses and other organizations have attended his business writing seminar, which he has presented at Emory University, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, and Reinhardt College and to groups in Atlanta, Washington, New York, Los Angeles, and other cities.
H e is the author or coauthor of seven published books: How to Make Your Writing Reader Friendly (1989), which has been used in writing courses at Northwestern University, the University of Alabama, West Georgia College, and Georgia State University; The Write Way (Pocket Books, 1995); Sleeping Dogs Don't Lay, a Book of the Month Club Selection (St. Martin*s Press, 2000); The Lost Art of the Great Speech, a how to book for speech writers and speakers, voted one of the thirty best business books of the year (AMACOM Books, 2000); Poor Farm Road, a novel (Publish America, 2001); The Motorbike Mystery, a children*s novel (Publish America, 2002); and The River Lady Mystery, a stand-alone sequel to The Motorbike Mystery (American Book Publishing, 2009)
He is a journalism graduate of the University of Alabama and was an army officer during the Korean War.
Dick and his wife live at Lake Arrowhead, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia, where Dick continues writing and consulting.

Sept 24th 6 p.m. Gregory A. Freeman - We are so excited to have Greg coming to Yawns with his new book "Troubled Waters" His last book "The Forgotten 500" has sold to be made into a movie. He is a great Non-Fiction author.
